MEDIGREEN at SEAFUTURE 2025 with Data for MSP

0

La Spezia, Italy – 1 October 2025
In a time of increasing pressure on marine resources, open access to ocean data is more important than ever to guide informed decisions, support climate adaptation, and foster a sustainable Blue Economy.

At the Global Ocean Observing & Governance Panel, held during Seafuture 2025, MEDIGREEN was represented by Cristina Cervera Nuñez (Instituto Español de Oceanografía, Project Coordinator) in Session II: Data-Driven Planning – Shaping the Future of Maritime Space.

Her intervention highlighted how the MEDIGREEN project applies Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) as a crucial tool for the European Green Deal transition in the Mediterranean Sea. The discussion emphasized the importance of harmonized marine data and the role of MSP in driving innovation, sustainability, and resilience in ocean governance.

Key points of her contribution included:

  • Strengthening the link between science, policy, and practice

  • Promoting MSP as a framework for sustainable maritime activities

  • Supporting Europe’s leadership in ocean data and climate adaptation

The panel brought together leading international voices on marine science, data, and governance, reinforcing the Mediterranean’s role as a laboratory for sustainable ocean solutions.

A special thanks goes to CORILA, Università Iuav di Venezia, and CNR-ISMAR Institute of Marine Sciences for their organisation and facilitation of this high-level discussion.
