MEDIGREEN at EMD 2026: networking and exchanges

On 21 May, on the occasion of the European Maritime Day held in Limassol, Cyprus, the workshop “Making the Sea-Basin Approach Work: Cooperation through MSP” took place. Organised by the NESBp and MEDIGREEN projects, the workshop provided an excellent opportunity to bring together different sea basins and exchange knowledge and experiences within the framework of Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP).

The session included a discussion with the audience and three panellists representing the Baltic Sea, North Sea and Mediterranean Sea basins. Key insights were gathered on topics such as the ecosystem-based approach at sea-basin scale, early MSP dialogue, sea-basin scenario building, and cooperation with non-EU countries. The workshop concluded with an open question regarding expectations for the upcoming Ocean Act, revealing generally optimistic attitudes towards its potential.

Supporting science-policy dialogue and fostering cooperation between policymakers, researchers and MSP practitioners is essential to building trust and translating scientific knowledge into effective regulations. The role of EU-funded projects in facilitating these exchanges was clearly demonstrated. Further activities are planned within the MEDIGREEN and NESBp projects to continue strengthening communication, promoting collaboration, and learning from diverse MSP experiences and transferable approaches.

In addition, the team met visitors at the CINEA stand, an important moment for networking and exchanges.
